Enthusiastic and determined, Dr. Valerie C. Marcano is a trailblazer who lives by her core values of authenticity, integrity, and fairness to advocate for health and belonging. She brings a unique view to team development consulting, with her sharp ability to solve problems and challenge conventional norms along the way. Her consulting approach evaluates team inclusion strategies and educates on topics ranging from mentorship and leadership to veterinary health and diversity, equity and inclusion.
In 2020, Dr. Valerie co-founded Pawsibilities Vet Med, a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to increasing support for veterinary teams and individuals from underrepresented communities. Pawsibilities Vet Med offers a virtual mentorship platform, regular professional development opportunities and numerous resources to its members. In 2022, Dr. Valerie founded ValCri Consulting, LLC providing inclusive mentorship, poultry health and veterinary accessibility consulting services. She is the inaugural chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the American Association of Avian Pathologists as well as a past member of the Commission for a Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive Veterinary Profession of the AVMA and AAVMC.
Dr. Valerie’s many achievements include being recognized by Today’s Veterinary Business as one of 22 Extraordinary Women in 2022. She along with her husband Dr. Seth Andrews both received the Outstanding Contribution to Diversity Equity and Inclusion award by the North Carolina Association of Minority Veterinarians. In 2023, Dr. Valerie received the Young Achiever Alumni Award at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Valerie’s career started at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine’s Veterinary Medical Scientist Training Program where she graduated with her veterinary (DVM) and PhD degrees. She is a board-certified diplomate of the American College of Poultry Veterinarians. Her educational background affords her experience in research, government, diagnostics, and private industry.
In her spare time, Dr. Valerie enjoys traveling, hiking and biking with her husband, as well as napping, playing the drums and cuddling her menagerie of creatures.
